Reading group – 18 August, Tuesday – Documenting Change Across Time: Longitudinal and Cross‐sectional CA Studies of Classroom Interaction

The next reading group is going to take place on Tuesday, August 18th at 3PM, in the meeting room of the department of foreign language education, 3rd floor.

We’re going to read a chapter by Simona Pekarek Doehler and Virginie Fasel Lauzon, from the very recent Handbook of Classroom Discourse and Interaction, edited by Numa Markee.

Doehler, S. P. and Lauzon, V. F. (2015) Documenting Change Across Time: Longitudinal and Cross‐sectional CA Studies of Classroom Interaction, in The Handbook of Classroom Discourse and Interaction (ed N. Markee), John Wiley & Sons, Inc, Hoboken, NJ.

Structure of the reading group:

We will start the reading group by summarizing the chapter, followed by an in-depth discussion. To prepare for the reading group, please read the chapter.

Additionally, you may want to do some of the following in order to prepare for the discussion:

  • Write down any questions you may have about the chapter
  • Find one or more passages that you find interesting
  • Think about how the points presented in the chapter relate to other theories or to your own research
  • Pretend to be the devil’s advocate and criticize the authors’ viewpoints

In the future reading groups, we’re going to talk about:

  • Experimental CA (Voutilainen et al 2015)
  • Ethnography/Micro-analysis (Cekaite 2007)
  • Knowledge displays (Koole 2010)

Hope to see you next week! 🙂
Best regards

Reading Group – Comparative Reproduction Research in CA

Dear all,

thanks for the lively discussions during our last reading group last week.

The next reading group is going to take place on Tuesday, August 4th at 3PM, in the meeting room of the department of foreign language education, 3rd floor.

We’re going to read a recent article by Numa Markee on comparatative reproduction research in Conversation Analysis.

Markee, N. (2015). Are replication studies possible in qualitative second/foreign language classroom research? A call for comparative re-production research. Language Teaching, , 1-17.

Abstract

A widely accepted orthodoxy is that it is impossible to do replication studies within qualitative research paradigms. Ontologically and epistemologically speaking, such a view is largely correct. However, in this paper, I propose that what I call comparative re-production research—that is, the empirical study of qualitative phenomena that occur in one context, which are then shown also to obtain in another—is a well-attested practice in ethnomethodological conversation analysis (CA). By extension, I further argue that researchers who do research on second and foreign language (L2) classrooms inspired by the conversation analysis-for-second-language acquisition movement should engage in comparative re-production research in order to make broad statements about the generality or prototypicality of the qualitative organization of particular practices across languages, cultures and institutional contexts.

Structure of the reading group:

We will start the reading group by summarizing the article, followed by an in-depth discussion. To prepare for the reading group, please read the article.

Additionally, you may want to do some of the following in order to prepare for the discussion:

  • Write down any questions you may have about the article
  • Find one or more passages that you find interesting
  • Think about how the points presented in the article relate to other theories or to your own research
  • Pretend to be the devil’s advocate and criticize the author’s viewpoints

In the future reading groups, we’re going to talk about:

  • Experimental CA (Voutilainen et al 2015)
  • Ethnography/Micro-analysis (Cekaite 2007)
  • Knowledge displays (Koole 2010)
  • CA-for-SLA (TBD)

Hope to see you next week! 🙂

Best regards
